Long Lessons

Autumn Leaf falling from Tree
Air outside is still,
Or so it seems to be.
Then one red leaf
Flutters down to rest.

Ground is covered,
(I will not say littered)
Ready for white blanket
Soon to come in winter’s wind.

Not one leaf will return
To hang upon the branch again.
Only in dark silence
Will they satisfy the Earth.

Though they fall of their own weight,
Yielding is not the slightest of our work.
Come May, new green will bless the world
With no memory of what has gone before.

  1. Thanks for your comment. There are always empty spaces on winter trees. And images of emptiness often signify mystery that hides in darkness of winter. Maybe that’s why you enjoy trees in winter so much?
