I should have known when I went for a walk with Spirit,
Noticed my shadow stayed behind,
Hiding under low branches of the trees.
Yet even walking down the road
There were other sentient shadows
Hovering just out of view,
Watching from the dark.
Suddenly there came flock of crows—
Followed by thieves who blocked the road.
I wished I’d stayed at home!
This seemed a living nightmare,
Like one I’d only read about
But now had to quickly learn
Whether this was dream or not.
Please, dear reader, as you read this poem,
Stay close to me.
When I sleep, watch over me.
Help me— send other ways to learn
So together we can banish shadows,
Except the ones we own.
