When Waking from Deep Sleep

Emerging from SleepThis morning, as I floated upward from deep sleep,
Came to soft clouded awareness in that second before eyes opened.
In that brief moment I was blind and naked… had not yet found my name.

So often, I’ve turned to others to tell me who I am—
My need to win approval, be affirmed, be held,
Did not know myself when standing alone,
Allowed others to lead me, looked inside their eyes
To be given power, belonging, my sense of worth.

Far too often, this web of ego was dependent
On many others— alone, I was lost.
This morning, surrounding fog of unknowing was a precious gift….
An awakening separated ego from inner Being—
No longer imprisoned in a crib but free to know my deeper Self.

Take away my forms, O God.  Let me rejoice in that space
Where I have no name, no labels, no titles, no gods…
Let me join in union with the larger world
Where all creation flows through me, with no need to measure or label,
No fear, no desperation to see myself through another’s view of me.
Help me settle deeply into my soul for just one moment,
One moment each morning and be grateful…
Rest deeply in that spaciousness before I rise into the morning,
Breathe deeply of Great Peace as I hear the singing birds.

  1. Beautifully written…speaks to me! I had that whole moment just yesterday morning..this particularly …” Let me join in union with the larger world
Where all creation flows through me, with no need to measure or label,
No fear, no desperation to see myself through another’s view of me.
Help me settle deeply into my soul for just one moment,
