Standing in Line; Waiting for Bread

Today, I stood in line for hours
Waiting for bread,
Waiting for hope,
Waiting for light,
Waiting for a miracle.

Finally, I dropped to my knees,
Clawed at the rotting floorboards,
Fingernails splintered prying and praying,
Trembling alone, hearing a roar
Inside the dark silence.

Some saints kept a perpetual fire
Burning as reminder of eternal Light.
I only have one match….
The stub of a candle to burn….
And what remains of my heart.
