What Can Only Be Seen in Darkness

Sometimes I reflect best when sun goes down,
Bustling pace of day slows to a crawl,
Lights come on to illuminate
What can only be seen in darkness.

If you look with care, you see the beauty—
Delightful scene appears as though the gods
Decided to put Elysium there, at water’s edge,
A golden light retreat upon the streets,
No need for crowds to seek the shade from heat.

I pass my nights in sounding praise,
Easy breeze of evening pleasant on the face.
Perhaps I will one day reside upon cool ocean shore,
Hearing hourly call of whispering tides, sweeping
To ease the cares of retreating day,
Burn away in tender passions of the night.
