How Long Must I Wait for Spring?

Today I woke to find my heart
Broken yet again,
Anguish spilling as pint of blood
Out upon cold stone.

How long, O Lord, before the race of Man
Awakens to the lovely play of common sense,
Learns to drink fully of the color of pure light,
Breaths deeply of the presence hidden in clear sight?

When will we heal the anger pitted on the face?
Take the time to honor dreams sent within the night?
So much lonely beauty blows across the Earth—
Why do my eyes sweep the hills
And see them empty as a weary face?

Must I wait another month for spring?
I want early daffodils to show their yellow now—
Send their grace upon the lawn with brilliant blossoms,
Cheat the cold of winter of its claim of death,
Blow their many trumpets to announce
Wiser rendering that dances on the swaying wind,
Returning birds and longer days that signal winter’s end,
Warms the crystal spell and settles down in peace.

  1. How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

Look on me and answer, LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me.

    Psalm 13
