First Kill of the Day

Grey heron waits in early morning water,
Steady legs an intricate detail in mix of
Textured reds so rich they wash the scene….
Stark shadows incredibly serene,
Wait for the killing of the fish,
Swimming toward its death,
Unaware I am there as witness.

The murder will be quiet and quick.
The fish will not cry.  The heron will fly.
Ripples on the water will die.
Only stark shadows will remain
As the red slowly changes to orange
And then to yellow in harsh light of day.
